Description

Sports massage

Sports massage is a relatively new modality that is receiving widespread recognition as a valuable adjunct to athletic training. A growing number of athletes, competitive or weekend warriors, are incorporating it into their sports training and competition regimen. Athletes, sports medicine practitioners and sports massage therapists are finding marvelous benefits from this modality.
Benefits of Sports Massage:
Improved circulation
Increased flexibility and range of motion
Decreased recovery time
Injury prevention

Swedish massage

While Swedish massage has some commonly recognized therapeutic effects, it is generally known as relaxation massage. This is the type of massage most spas offer. Each session begins with long, gliding strokes to help improve circulation and warm up the tissue for deeper strokes, while you slowly drift off into a state of relaxation. Stroke length, speed and pressure vary depending on bodily response. Techniques such as effleurage (long slow gliding strokes), Petrissage (kneading), friction (crossing muscle fibers, gently undoing scar tissue and adhesions) and many others will guide you into bliss. The combination of these techniques increases circulation; cleanse tissues and stretch muscles and joints.

Deep Tissue

Deep Tissue Bodywork is a therapeutic technique used to reduce or eliminate bodily pain and discomfort. This technique often goes very deep into musculoskeletal tissue, however, the term deep seems to refer more to its penetrating effects. Deep Tissue is designed to relieve muscles of scarring and adhesions that cause pain and limited range of motion, reduce pain and swelling after injury and increase ease and range of motion. While this technique is clinical in the sense that it is used to address issues of dis-ease, deep tissue work can be profoundly relaxing.

Trigger Point

Trigger Point Release is a clinical technique used to eliminate myofascial trigger points from bodily tissue. The term "trigger point" seems to be a very misused and misunderstood term. While a trigger point is a sensitive point or "hot spot" in muscle tissue, this description is lacking details essential to its understanding. A trigger point is hypersensitive to pressure, however, by definition it must also produce a characteristic referral pattern of pain or sensation elsewhere in the body. A true trigger point will also limit range of motion, which could cause a chain reaction, altering body mechanics and posture.

Orthopedic

Orthopedic massage is a manual approach to the treatment of numerous pain and injury conditions previously treated only with conventional, medical methods. Providing a comprehensive system of treatment that incorporates a wide variety of massage treatment techniques, our PSOAS practitioner will provide the most effective treatment for a particular orthopedic condition. Whether you are suffering from whip-lash, a sprained ankle, tennis or golfers elbow, many types of impingement syndromes or any type of tendonitis orthopedic massage is often a holistic alternative to pills, injections or surgery.

Craniosacral

Craniosacral therapy is a very powerful, but subtle form of bodywork that addresses the delicate and usually fine-tuned system that circulates the nutrient-rich cerebrospinal fluid to the brain and spinal column. Normal wave-like movements flow 8-14 times per minute from the sacrum up through the ventricles in the brain. This movement causes the cranial bones to move into their own patterns of flexion and extension. Scientists have confirmed that these cranial and spinal movement are inextricably linked with physical, mental and emotional health. If there is any impedance in this system (i.e.: concussions - even if they were 10 years ago, whiplash, stress, chronic muscle tension) the effects on the body can be numerous and unpredictable.

Myofascial release

Myofascial release represents a technique specifically aimed at facilitating positive change within a connective tissue in the body known as fascia. Fascia has been described as the most pervasive tissue in the body, representing a three-dimensional network from head to toe. Close to the surface of the body, fascia is a loose, stretchy tissue attached under the skin. Deep within the body, the fascia becomes thick and dense, wrapping itself around organs and between the compartments of the entire torso. The muscles of a human body and the structural nature of its fascia are inextricably linked, thus, myofascial release seeks to alleviate the pain, discomfort, and loss of movement suffered by dysfunctional muscle/fascia integration.

Prenantal

Pre and post-natal massage represents one of the most effective resources available to ease the discomfort and increase the enjoyment of your pregnancy. Traditionally, massage has been used through the ages to help new and expectant mothers to adjust to their changing bodies and to help them through the myriad sensations, emotions, and challenges that are associated with pregnancy, labor, and post-partum stages. Certain contraindications apply, so be sure to let your therapist know if you have any medical conditions which might complicate your pregnancy or require a different massage strategy (diabetes, preeclampsia, high blood pressure, ect.) At PSOAS, we offer massage to pre and post natal clients.

Couples

What is couple's massage? It is two massages given simultaneously, in the same room, to two different people, on two separate tables by two massage therapists. Our clients have described appreciating the experience for various reasons. Some enjoy the togetherness, others as a romantic gesture and others as a creative and efficient way of using the baby sitter. Regardless of the reason, they all love the massage of course.

Corporate

With PSOAS corporate massage, you can expect us to apply the same dedication and expertise towards improving employee performance that we do towards improving athletic performance. We treat work posture and function with the same combination of informed intuition and clinical know-how that make us San Francisco's premier sports massage provider. As with our athletic clients, we use our skills in the work setting to prevent injury, encourage greater physical capacity, and sharpen the efficiency of activities that require repetitive motion.
