TAR AND GRAVEL |
Roofing systems constructed of hot asphalt and fiberglass roofing felts have proven themselves over the decades. Our typical four-ply roofs are fully guaranteed for 20 years and with general maintenance have a 35-to-40 year life expectancy. We have hundreds of roofs that we installed in the 1950's and 1960's that are still water tight today. The generic "tar and gravel" term simply means the asphalt and gravel coating on top. A coating can also be a smooth aluminite or a white polymer. |
MODIFIED BITUMEN (APP & SBS) |
Bitumen-type roofing systems are best applied on low-sloped roofs. Most manufacturers of bitumen roofs do not allow their installation on flat roofs that have any ponding water. Historically, bitumen roofs have not had a good life expectancy, especially on flat roofs. No manufacturer of bitumen-type roofing warranties these products on residential roofing or re-roofing. |
ALTERNATIVE SYSTEMS (Thermoplastic, Thermoset, Liquid Applied Foam, etc.) |
There are numerous other types of roofing systems on the market. Typically, these systems have material components that the manufacturers change frequently. This prevents long-term observation and analysis. The perennial question is "if these systems perform as claimed by the manufacturers, why are they continually changing the material components?" Many of these systems are difficult if not impossible to alter after they are installed. A simple roof penetration (as in bath remodel vents) are extremely difficult to waterproof to some roof systems. |
SHINGLES (Traditional) |
Modern shingles are composed of a fiberglass base saturated in asphalt with mineral granules pressed into the surface. The manufacturers’ warrantees vary from 15 to 50 years, with 40 years the most popular product in the Bay Area. These shingles are the mainstay of sloped roofs and typically provide a waterproof system for an average of five years longer than the warrantee. However, as always "the devil is in the details": The critical areas are in the flashings. Old ones must always be removed and replaced. Typically, this requires the remount and replacement of adjoining siding, reglet flashings on chimneys, etc. |
TILES |
Quality roof tiles are made from clay or cement. Plastic-type products have proven to be problematic. Once again, "the devil is in the details." Our installers use copper nails and copper, lead and/or stainless steel flashings. Galvanized steel cannot function as long as a tile roof system. We always include the removal and replacement of the flashings. (Some contractors make "startling" discoveries, and demand additional charges for replacement of flashings that they knew about previously, or should have!) When tile roofs are installed properly they provide a very long service life (50 to 80 years). However, they are susceptible to foot traffic damage, and only experienced roofing people should walk on them. |
SLATES |
Natural slate roofs are beautiful as well as long lasting. Slate roofs installed with copper or stainless steel nails and copper and lead flashings can provide a service life of over 100 years. The highest skill levels are required to install slate roofs. All slates must be "sounded" (like a tuning fork). Typically up to 10% of all slates are defective and must be discarded, not put on your roof. Slate roofs are susceptible to foot traffic damage and only experienced roofing people should walk on them. |
SHAKES |
Wood shakes are beautiful, especially to a fire. We have all seen numerous neighborhoods in California where every house that had wood shakes on the roof burnt to the ground while almost all the houses with the tile roofs survived. As a matter of conscience, Standard Roofing Company will not install wood shakes or wood shingle roofing at any price (fire-proof wood is an oxymoron). We install fireproof/windproof (150+ miles per hour) synthetic shingles and shakes that look like wood shingles and shake roofs. |
SEAMLESS GUTTERS |
Gutters are an integral part of all sloped roof systems. |
SLOPED METAL ROOFS |
Metal roofing is gaining wide acceptance and is the single fastest growing roofing system in the world. We do not favor coated steel roofing, but aluminum and copper roofing systems are beautiful, excellent performers and have an outstanding life expectancy. We install numerous varieties of aluminum roofing systems and pre-manufactured or custom-made copper roofs. We also install aluminum and copper shingle roofing. If you have an ocean-front home, we can install titanium metal roofs. |
DECKS |
There are two general types of decks: * Decks sitting on dirt or concrete. * Decks that are waterproofed with habitable space under them. The first type of deck is very common and its function and appearance are familiar to most property owners. We build these types of decks with natural wood products and also synthetic products. The second type of deck is not so well understood, either in function or appearance, by many property owners. The type of waterproofing to be used on these decks is determined by the size of the deck, the slope of the building structure and the type of deck covering to be used. |
RAILINGS |
Railings must be of a certain height with a certain spacing of the styles (posts) to be code compliant. Railings must also be properly attached to the deck and/or adjoining walls of the building or leaks will occur. |
FLASHING |
Decks must be properly flashed to adjoining walls and doors, with special attention around doors. Waterproof decks are complicated and only fully-trained, accredited craftsmen should install them. |
