When shooting inside a nightclub, or any place that is really dark for that matter, it is recommended to put the focusing ring in the center position (on a DSLR). It makes focusing that much easier and quicker...if the focusing was on the whole scene for example, it would be searching more since the light would be very faint.
Also, when bouncing flash on the ceiling upward or pointing the flash straight towards the subject, keep in mind how high the ceiling is, what color it is, and what you plan to accomplish in the photo. If pointing straight at the subject, a flash diffuser is recommended so as not to blind the subjects!
