Healthcare Institutions Can Receive $44k To $60k Towards IT...

It’s the biggest news in healthcare in years. And never has there been a time when we needed it more. The economic pressures being felt by physician practices everywhere are overwhelming: from declining reimbursements to increasing patient accounts receivable, to an overall increase in uninsured patients. The Healthcare industry is in need of help to make the proper changes necessary to make each clinic run smoother.
The Federal Government is providing billions of dollars earmarked for the healthcare industry as part of the nation’s economic stimulus package. This stimulus package is designed to help the clinics run smoother by offsetting the costs for physician practices and hospitals to adopt Healthcare Information Technologies (HIT). Technologies like Electronic Health Records (EHR), e-prescribing, and additional technologies like patient communication solutions (patient portals).
Time is indeed of the essence if physicians and hospitals want to receive the full incentive payment for HIT adoption beginning in 2011. The monies are significant: for physicians, the full payment between 2011 and 2015 will range between $44K and $60K. For each year a physician is not in the program, the incentive payments decline by 1% each year. The ultimate calculation of payments to physicians is based on Medicare patient volume.
Although this money does not begin for another 18-21 months, any entity that wants to participate in this incentive program must be using systems at that time in order to receive the benefits of this economic stimulus bill. In addition, if providers are not participating in some kind of HIT program by 2015, there will be penalties for not participating in the program.
