Title Repair Transmission for a 1989 Cadillac Seville * Tranny Problem
Description After 5-10 minutes of driving, the overdrive (4th gear) and 3rd gear slips out and goes into neutral, forcing to drive the car in either 2nd or 1st gear. Otherwise, the car drives nicely. I find it hard to believe it needs a total transmission rebuild and hoping it's a simpler and less expensive problem to correct. The car is parked at my residence in North Bend, WA.

I would guess you have either the 200 R4 or 700 R4 trans. Either way these transmissions use a cable connected to the throttle to program the shifts. If the cable is mis-adjusted you could burn up the clutch packs in the trans. very quickly! Check the oil dipstick and see if the fluid is red and transparent. If it is very dark and smells burnt, sorry, bad news. Checking the T.V. pressure with a gauge would be another test to do, and removal of the oil pan is also recommended. More than a teaspoon of gunk in pan means its time for new clutches. You can contact me via jbosstyn@comcast.net or 425-269-6185
