Charging People is Tricky
I deal with large companies that make millions of dollars, mom & pop shops that only make thousands, and non-profit organizations that usually want "donated work."
I usually like to find the budget (ex. $300-$800) to stay under, then add/subtract from what the client expects to be done for that price.
Most people want to charge a per hour (usually $45 for Graphic Design Services) or get a flat rate for something.
But it's never that easy.
You and the client agree on $300 for the logo... then you end up making a business card, flyer, facebook page, postcard and get talked into creating a website all for the same $300.
Your best bet is to find out EVERYTHING the client will NEED, NOT WANT... then agree on the price/budget.
